Shri Giriraj Govardhan

Shri Giriraj Govardhan Leela

(This is a short description which has been translated from the Hindi version of the Holy Garg Samhita written by Shri Garg Muni)

Raja Bahulawan inquired from Narad muni:

Just like a young child would uproot a mushroom playfully and lift it in his hand, similarly we have heard that Shree Krishn only with one hand lifted the Govardhan parvat, like an umbrella; please tell us how this adbhut but divya leela happened?

Then Naradji narrates this divya sacred leela.

Just like farmers have to pay a tax to the king every year, similarly the Vrajvasis annually in Sharad ritu offered puja and bhog to Indrdev.

When Krishn Chander saw everyone preparing for this big puja, He wished to know some details from His father Nand baba; also whether this Indr pujan is capable of giving fruits in this mayavik world or in the spiritual world.

Nand baba replies that all of them worship with the belief that this pujan and bhog can grant moksh also to all of the worshippers.

Shree Krishn replies:

“Baba, Indr and all other devtaas enjoy the pleasures of swarg because of their past punya and karmas. Through this enjoyment when the good karmas are over, they also have to come back to mrityu lok; this is the reason that this pujan and bhog to Indr is not the right way to moksh. You should only do satkarma with Shree Hari bhajan. Anyone who worships Hari without seeking results from their satkarmas only, can reach param moksh – there is no other way”.

Gau, brahamn, sadhu, agni, devta, ved, dharam; are all vibhuties of Bhagwan Yogeshwar. Those who depend on this and do Hari bhajan are the one's who will find joy in this world and the other world. This Giriraj Govardhan who manifested through the chest of Hari, came here through the powers of Pulastya maharishi – all the pujan and bhog samagri should be now offered to this great parvat, he is not just yagya, he is the king of yagya; he is very dear to me. I have explained it all, now you can make the decision of what you all wish to follow”.

After hearing and understanding various truths, the Vrajvasis decide to do pujan of Shri Govardhan instead of Indrdev. (details of this conversation can be read in the granth Garg Samhita).

Then all the gopas, gopis, Nand baba with his two sons, Nand, Upnand, Vrasbhanugan with their families came to Govardhan. Radha comes with Her millions of sakhis, in full splendor.

Also came the Ganga and Yamuna; the personified vedas, the great rishis, several different types of kanyas from all over, Shiv with Parvati and Nandi came to the Giriraj Mandal.

The main Rajshri, Brahm Brahmrishi, Devshri, Siddeshwars, Hans, Yogeshwar, hundreds of brahmins also come for darshans.

Every Shila on the great Govardhan becomes jewel like. The shikhars become golden spreading their radiance all around. The parvat resembles a huge elephant full of intoxicated bees, flowing streams and beautiful caves.

The Meru and the Himalaya with other parvats also come in their divya forms with several gifts for Govardhan, and bow with respect before the Giriraj.

The historic pujan then takes place according to the vidhi shown by Shree Krishn Himself.

Once this is complete everyone does a prikrama of Govardhan. All around there is great festivity and in the middle Giriraj Govardhan shines like a great emperor.

To strengthen the Vrajvasis faith Shree Krishn then takes the gigantic form declaring that He is the great Giriraj Govardhan; He enjoys all the annakut bhog that has been offered and blesses the people gathered there.

On having darshans of Giriraj Govardhan form, the people experience great joy and feel blessed by the unique darshans. The Vrajvasis thus believe that all their pujans and bhog have been perfectly accepted by the great Govardhan and so its kripa will always be on them.

Indrdev's anger:

Shri Naradji then describes how Indrdev gets very angry when he hears from Naradji himself about the replacement of his annual yagya pujan and worship by the Govardhan pujan. So to show his anger and power to the humble Vrajvasis he summons his 'Sanvartak' clouds which are released only for pralay (end of the world) and orders it to go destroy the entire Vraj.

On hearing Indrdev's orders the strange coloured powerful cloud goes towards Vraj and pours rain drops as large as an elephant. Crores of rocks as large as a mountain shikhar fall on Vraj. Strong winds begin to blow which uproots trees and houses.

All the seven Lok including the Patal Lok within the Brahmand fill with the sound of destruction, the thunder and rain. The diggaj were uneasy and stars begin to fall on earth.

All Vrajvasis along with their families run to Nand's house and take shelter with Bhagvan Krishn and Balram: Please save us from the fury of Indr; acting upon your words we stopped the Indrdev yagya and instead worshipped Shri Govardhan.

Shree Krishn calms them and instructs them to go towards Shri Govardhan, explaining that he who had accepted their pujan, so will protect them.

Then Shree Hari Himself with His family goes to Giriraj Govardhan. Here He playfully plucks the Giriraj from the ground and holds it up with his left hand like an umbrella.

Just like a child without effort picks up a 'gobar chatta', or an elephant plucks a lotus with his trunk; in a similar manner Kripalu, Karunamayi Prabhu Shree Vrajrajnandan effortlessly picks up the great parvat to protect His Vrajvasis.

He then tells all the gop's, mother, father: Vrajvallabheshwargan, “Gather all your valuables, cows etc and take shelter below the Giriraj. This is the one place where there is absolutely no fear of Indr”. Then at Shree Krishn's request Balram and all the gwal's His age also put up their sticks to hold the Giriraj.

Soon Shree Krishn sees a huge flood of water coming towards Giriraj Govardhan; from deep in His mind

He orders His Sudarshan Chakra and Shaesh to take care of the situation.

Sudarshan Chakra which is as brillant as koti (crore) suns, then goes on top of the Govardhan Giriraj and begins to drink the entire flow of water-similar to how Agastya muni had drunk up the entire samudra-ocean.

From below the Govardhan parvat, Shaesh naag forms a circle around and stops the flood of water; it becomes similar to a sea shore which stops the ocean water from flooding the beaches. Gowardhandhari Shree Hari stands thus for seven days holding the Giriraj like an umbrella.

The entire time all the gop gaze at Krishnchandr in fascination.

Meanwhile Indrdev riding his Airavat elephant, full of anger enters Vraj mandal with his army. From a distance he throws his vajra weapon to destroy Vraj town. Shree Madhav sees this from a distance, paralyzes Indr's weapon along with his arm. Frightened at being over powered Indr flees. Immediately the sun rises, clouds move away, the wind stops and rivers withdraw. The earth dries up.

With Bhagwan Krishn's order all gop come out from under the Giriraj Govardhan and before every one's eyes KrishnChander puts down the Giriraj as it was before.

Seeing this leela all worship Shree Krishn including the devtas, gandharv's, siddhas; all shower flowers from the sky, singing glories of Bhagvan Krishn.
